The VA K-12 Computer Science Pipeline Project

Chesapeake Public Schools and Loudoun County Public Schools are collaborating on the construction on the VA K-12 Computer Science Pipeline, which will include the creation of a K-8 Curriculum and an internship program through Experiential Learning in grades 9-12.
Through the work of the Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF), Chesapeake Public Schools and Loudoun County Public Schools were awarded with a Go Virginia Grant in partnership with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission in order to: increase the number of students enrolled in advanced high school computer science courses; foster an increase in the number of businesses served with student interns; increase the number of students grades 9-12 completing internships, apprenticeships, and mentorships; and increase the number of students who select Computer Science as a major.

The two school divisions will do so by: creating 275 internships within 2-years; host 3 Division-Wide STEM Internship Fairs per year; create an integrated K-12 Computer Science curriculum; Develop depository for this curriculum, lesson plans, and other resources as an open source for sharing for school divisions across the Commonwealth through GoOpenVA; and the creation of an Experiential Learning handbook and marketing resources.

This presentation will discuss the roadmap that the two school systems have crafted and have been engaged in and will share all resources that they have available with attendees.
